Walking alongside street children and children in extreme vulnerability
SAFIRE works with children in street situations and children in extreme vulnerability in Mauritius. Its approach is built on street outreach: reaching children where they already are, building a relationship before offering a programme, and working with the family and the community around the child rather than removing the child from it wherever that is possible.
The organisation runs day centres, non-formal education and vocational preparation for children who have left school, family mediation, and accompaniment towards reintegration into schooling, training or employment. It also works on the conditions that put children on the street in the first place — household poverty, addiction, violence and school exclusion.

A nine-month workshop programme in carpentry, catering and light mechanics for forty-five adolescents who left school before completing it.

Daily street outreach in four Port Louis neighbourhoods and a day centre offering meals, washing facilities, non-formal education and a case worker.

The carpentry cohort finished their first commissioned build this month — twelve benches for a community centre, made to a real specification with a real deadline. The difference between practice work and a job somebody is waiting for is visible in how they worked.
Eight placements confirmed with local workshops for the cohort finishing in February.

Nine children returned to formal schooling this term after accompaniment through the day centre. Two of them had been out of school for more than three years, and getting a place for a child that far out of the system takes as much work with the school as with the child.
Outreach contacts are up in Roche Bois and down in Plaine Verte. We do not yet know whether that is movement or attrition, and we are looking into it.
