Rs 26,000 covers one child’s full year of day centre access, meals and case work.

Outreach teams work four Port Louis neighbourhoods every day, six days a week. They do not arrive with a programme; they arrive repeatedly, until a child decides they are worth talking to. That is slow, and it is the only part of this work that cannot be skipped.
The day centre is what outreach leads to: a meal, somewhere to wash and sleep safely during the day, non-formal education sessions pitched at where the child actually is rather than where their age says they should be, and a case worker who follows the same child for as long as it takes.
Funding covers two outreach teams, the centre’s running costs, meals, and the case workers who hold it together.

Nine children returned to formal schooling this term after accompaniment through the day centre. Two of them had been out of school for more than three years, and getting a place for a child that far out of the system takes as much work with the school as with the child.
Outreach contacts are up in Roche Bois and down in Plaine Verte. We do not yet know whether that is movement or attrition, and we are looking into it.
