HIV prevention, treatment support and harm reduction since 1996
PILS is a Mauritian non-governmental organisation working on HIV and AIDS since 1996. It supports people living with HIV, campaigns against the stigma and discrimination that keep people away from testing and treatment, and works on prevention and harm reduction with the populations most exposed to infection in Mauritius.
Its work spans treatment literacy and adherence support, community outreach and testing, harm reduction alongside people who use drugs, and advocacy for a public health response built on evidence and rights rather than on criminalisation. PILS also acts as a network organisation, supporting smaller community groups working on the same issues.

A mobile unit taking free, confidential HIV and hepatitis C testing to the neighbourhoods where people are least likely to walk into a clinic.

Twelve months of peer accompaniment for people starting antiretroviral treatment — the window in which most people who disengage from care do so.

Six new peer supporters finished their training last week — four of them are people we accompanied through their own first year, which is exactly how this is meant to work.
Retention in care at twelve months for the accompanied group is holding above 90 per cent. We will publish the full-year figures once the cohort closes.

The mobile unit completed its 100th stop this month. Across the last quarter that is 1,340 tests, and — the number that matters — 96 per cent of reactive results were linked to care within seven days.
The Thursday evening stop has consistently the highest turnout of any slot we run, which tells us something about who cannot get to a clinic during working hours.
