Twelve months of peer accompaniment for people starting antiretroviral treatment — the window in which most people who disengage from care do so.
Rs 18,000 supports one patient through a full first year on treatment.

The first year on treatment decides most of what follows. People who are supported through it mostly stay in care; people who are not, frequently do not — and by the time that shows up in a clinic record, months of viral suppression have been lost.
This project pairs each newly diagnosed patient with a trained peer supporter for twelve months: accompaniment to appointments, help navigating the public health system, practical problem-solving around side effects, work and family disclosure, and a phone number that answers.
Funding covers eight peer supporters, their training and supervision, transport for home and clinic visits, and the clinical supervision that keeps the model safe.

Six new peer supporters finished their training last week — four of them are people we accompanied through their own first year, which is exactly how this is meant to work.
Retention in care at twelve months for the accompanied group is holding above 90 per cent. We will publish the full-year figures once the cohort closes.
