A mobile unit taking free, confidential HIV and hepatitis C testing to the neighbourhoods where people are least likely to walk into a clinic.
Rs 640 covers one full testing encounter, including the kit and the follow-up referral.

Testing that requires somebody to walk into a building with a sign on it will always miss the people who most need it. The mobile unit goes to them: fixed weekly stops in eight neighbourhoods across four districts, free and confidential rapid testing for HIV and hepatitis C, immediate linkage to care for a reactive result, and harm reduction supplies and referral on the spot.
The budget covers the vehicle and its running costs, test kits, a two-person clinical team, and the outreach workers who make the stops work — without whom the unit is a van nobody approaches.

The mobile unit completed its 100th stop this month. Across the last quarter that is 1,340 tests, and — the number that matters — 96 per cent of reactive results were linked to care within seven days.
The Thursday evening stop has consistently the highest turnout of any slot we run, which tells us something about who cannot get to a clinic during working hours.
