Accompanying families out of poverty, across every district
Caritas Île Maurice is the social action organisation of the Catholic Diocese of Port Louis and part of the international Caritas confederation. It works with families living in poverty across Mauritius through a network of regional centres and parish-based volunteers, and its assistance is given without regard to the religion of the people who receive it.
Its programmes cover emergency food and material assistance, housing support and repair, accompaniment of families in extreme poverty, support for children’s schooling, and the emergency response mobilised after cyclones and floods. Much of the day-to-day work is carried out by volunteers organised regionally, which is what gives it reach into localities a centralised service would not touch.

School materials, uniforms, transport and after-school tutoring for 260 children in families already being accompanied out of extreme poverty.

Roof, sanitation and structural repairs for eighty households living in unsafe conditions, prioritised by regional centres that already know the families.

The school year started on time for all 260 children, and for the first time nobody was waiting on materials in week one. The uniform distribution moved to December precisely so that would stop happening.
After-school tutoring is now running in six centres. We need four more volunteer tutors for the Port Louis and Bambous sessions — evenings, two hours, no teaching qualification required.

Twenty-two households completed this quarter — fourteen roof repairs, five sanitary blocks and three structural jobs. Two of the roof cases had been on the regional centre’s list for over a year waiting on funding.
The waiting list currently stands at 63 households. We are prioritising the cases with young children or an elderly resident.
