Protecting Mauritian lagoons through science, education and community action
Reef Conservation is a Mauritian non-governmental organisation dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of the island’s coastal and marine environment. Working from the north-west coast since 2003, it combines lagoon monitoring and applied marine science with environmental education and work alongside the coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on a healthy reef.
Its education programme runs through a marine discovery centre and a schools outreach programme, and its field work covers coral and seagrass monitoring, marine litter, and training for fishers, boat operators and tourism staff on lagoon use.

A full-year marine science programme for eighteen coastal primary schools, ending in a supervised snorkel survey each class runs itself.

Quarterly coral, seagrass and water-quality surveys across twelve fixed lagoon stations, published as an open dataset local decision-makers can actually use.

Eleven of the eighteen schools have now finished their snorkel day. Watching a class that was nervous about putting its face in the water spend forty minutes counting fish is the whole programme in one afternoon.
Remaining seven schools are booked before the end of term, weather permitting.

Second-quarter survey is complete across all twelve stations. Coral cover is holding at the northern stations; the two stations closest to the river mouth show the turbidity spike we see every year after heavy rain, and we will know by the next survey whether it cleared as usual.
