Cancer awareness, early detection and patient support
Link to Life is a Mauritian non-governmental organisation working on cancer awareness, early detection and support for patients and their families. Its work covers public awareness and screening campaigns, practical and emotional support for people undergoing treatment, and support groups for patients and carers.
A significant part of what the organisation does is unglamorous and decisive: getting patients to their appointments, helping households absorb the cost of a long treatment course, and making sure that a diagnosis in a family without means does not become a treatment abandoned halfway through.

The October awareness campaign reached fourteen workplaces and six community centres, with 1,600 people attending a session and 430 screening referrals made on the spot.

Eighty-two patients used the transport service this quarter, across 940 individual journeys. Not one of them missed a scheduled session for transport reasons, which is the only metric this project has.
Two of our four vehicles are past 200,000 km and the maintenance is becoming the second-largest line in the budget.
