Making recycling ordinary in Mauritius
Mission Verte works to make waste sorting and recycling a normal part of daily life in Mauritius. It operates a network of voluntary drop-off points for recyclable materials, works with municipalities, schools and companies on sorting at source, and runs public education on waste reduction.
Its focus is deliberately practical rather than declarative: a recycling point that is close by, reliably emptied and clearly labelled changes behaviour, and one that is none of those things teaches people that recycling does not work. Much of the organisation’s effort goes into the logistics that keep the network credible.

School sorting programme is now in twenty-two schools. The format that works is the one where the pupils run the audit themselves and present the results to their own headmaster — considerably more effective than any assembly we have ever given.
We can take four more schools this term.

Six new points are live — three in Plaines Wilhems, two in Moka, one in Port Louis. Tonnage across the whole network for the quarter came to 148 tonnes, of which glass is still the largest fraction by weight and PET by volume.
The Curepipe point had to be relocated forty metres after complaints about the collection lorry blocking a lane. Worth mentioning because siting is the part of this work that people underestimate.
