Field monitoring of wild echo parakeet nest cavities through the Black River Gorges breeding season, with intervention where a brood is at risk.

The echo parakeet went from roughly a dozen known birds in the 1980s to a wild population in the hundreds. That recovery is not self-sustaining yet: nest cavities are scarce, competition from introduced species is constant, and disease can move through a season’s broods quickly.
Each breeding season a field team locates and monitors active cavities, records clutch and fledging outcomes, and intervenes where a brood would otherwise be lost. This project covers one full season: field staff, climbing and camera equipment, veterinary support, and the data work that turns a season of observations into the next season’s management decisions.

Early season count: 31 active cavities located so far, 19 of them with confirmed clutches. Two cavities near the ridge were taken over by introduced birds before the pair could lay, and both have been fitted with the modified entrance plates that worked last season.
The wet start has slowed access to the upper sites, so the second survey sweep moves to the following fortnight.
