Mangrove is the cheapest coastal protection Mauritius has, and the south-east has been losing it. This project replants six hectares of degraded fringe between Pointe d’Esny and Mahebourg and — the part that decides whether it works — maintains the plantings for two full years, because a mangrove propagule that is planted and then abandoned is a photo opportunity, not a coastline.
Propagules are collected and grown locally, and planting teams are recruited and trained from the surrounding villages. The budget covers the nursery, the team, the two-year maintenance schedule and quarterly survival monitoring.

Forty-one volunteers on Saturday, and 3,800 propagules in the ground across two sections of the fringe. Thank you to everyone who stood in the mud for six hours.
Survival check on the first section planted last quarter came back at 78 per cent, which is well ahead of what we budgeted for. The losses cluster in one channel where the current is stronger than the survey suggested — we are replanting that stretch with taller stock rather than propagules.
